Wednesday 30 January 2019 - Oslo
Today take a full-day tour of Oslo. View the Opera House, a magnificent modern building, designed to resemble a glacier floating in the Oslofjord. By contrast admire the neo-classical Royal Palace and the medieval fortress protecting Oslo from external threats.
Walk through the Vigelands Park to see some of the 212 granite and bronze statues by Norway's best-loved sculptor, Gustav Vigeland, including entwined lovers, tranquil elderly couples, bawling babies and contempt-ridden beggars.
Travel to Bygdøy peninsula and visit the Viking Museum to see the amazing craftsmanship of these preserved ships and learn of their uses from exploration, to war, to burial. Find out about Norway’s polar expeditions at the Fram Museum and see a great film explaining the northern lights. Finally, enjoy the fascinating story of the Kon-Tiki journeys and see some of the original rafts.
Enjoy a traditional Norwegian lunch overlooking the city and fjords.
Finally, go to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump Museum which has a great exhibit about climate change, as well as Norwegian skiing history. Take the lift to the top of the ski jump and imagine what it is like for those crazy jumpers. On a clear day you can see for ever.
Evening free to dine in one of the city’s trendy restaurants.
Thursday 31 January 2019 - Oslo
This morning take a culinary tour which not only showcases the flavours of Norway but allows you to explore some of the most interesting parts of Oslo including the new artist colony along the river. Walk through the Market Hall, tasting the absolutely classic Norwegian brown cheese (which, believe it or not, isn’t a cheese at all) as well as many other local delicacies. Arrive at the docks for a mixed plate of local foods such as reindeer and fish in what is probably the most typical Norwegian restaurant in town. And to finish off, go to a microbrewery to taste delicious handcrafted beer.
Return to the hotel. The rest of your afternoon and evening are free. Please ask our helpful staff for information about things to do.
